Reflecting Wild Workshops

With Dr Abby Letteri and Dr Debbie Prattley

What does your horse's day-to-day reality look like compared to a horse living wild and free?

In Reflecting Wild we connect equine worlds, comparing herd life, environment, danger, and health side by side.

By exploring how your horse's world differs from their evolutionary heritage, you can find ways to bring more of what they naturally need into the life they have.

Even small changes can have significant impacts on our horses' wellbeing.

In the Reflecting Wild workshops we'll guide you through each step, considering practical options and having conversations about the pros, cons and ethics of how we keep our horses.

You'll go home with a deeper understanding of your horse and your own action plan for their future care.

Reflecting Wild Workshops

With Dr Abby Letteri and Dr Debbie Prattley

What does your horse's day-to-day reality look like compared to a horse living wild and free?

In Reflecting Wild we connect equine worlds, exploring how your horse's life differs from their evolutionary heritage and how we could better meet their needs.

We start by understanding how wild horses live - how they form bonds, bands and herds, how they socialise, interact and communicate. We compare that to our own horses' social history and current life, then consider what changes we could make to allow them to feel safe and happy.

We'll also look at their environments (what and how they eat, how much they move, and changes across seasons), how they perceive and respond to danger, and compare health issues in the wild and in domesticity.

At each stage we'll investigate ways we can adapt our facilities and practices to allow our horses to express more of their natural behaviours, reducing their stress and enhancing their lives.

Meet Dr Abby Letteri

Abby is the author of Perfectly Themselves: Horses in the Human World, which explores the lives of domestic, free-living and wild horses. Her PhD research examined relationships between horses and humans across cultures and throughout history, with a focus on how human activity has shaped horses’ lives. She travels extensively—from Aotearoa to the Outer Hebrides, Iceland, Mongolia and beyond—to observe horses living outside traditional domestic contexts, seeking to better understand who horses are and what matters to them, and what these lives might teach us about the horses in our care.

Meet Dr Debbie Prattley

Debbie is a rehabilitation veterinarian and osteopath who has treated thousands of horses in the decades since graduating from vet school. Each horse has taught her more about how domesticated and ridden life affects them, seeing the cumulative effects of their environment, nutrition, training and tack on their bodies and behaviour.

Contrasting this with the lives of free-living horses highlighted a powerful opportunity to collaborate with Abby. In Reflecting Wild, Debbie brings hands-on expertise to help you translate a deeper understanding of your horse into practical, tangible changes that support their lifelong wellbeing.

Reflecting Wild helps you to see life through your horse's eyes.

We all want our horses to feel safe, happy and have good lives - as seen from their point of view.
